What Is Benzene?

Benzene is a flammable but colorless liquid with a “sweet” odor. It’s typically used in the production of plastics, rubbers, lubricants, detergents, dyes, drugs, and pesticides. It’s naturally found in crude oil, gasoline, motor vehicle exhaust, and cigarette smoke.

Why Is Benzene Dangerous?

According to the American Cancer Society, benzene is known to cause cancer based on evidence conducted on studies involving both lab animals and humans. Specifically, benzene exposure is linked to leukemia and other cancers that affect blood cells. Benzene can be absorbed through the skin, which makes its presence in sunscreen products particularly concerning.

Which Johnson & Johnson Sunscreen Products Are Affected?

Although there are many sunscreen products produced by Johnson & Johnson companies, there are currently only five specific products that are contaminated with benzene. All of these products are aerosol spray sunscreens.

The following products are subject to the Johnson & Johnson recall:

  • Neutrogena Beach Defense
  • Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport
  • Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense
  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer
  • Aveeno Protect + Refresh

If you’ve recently purchased or used any of the products listed above, you may be eligible to pursue compensation in a class-action lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson. Our tainted sunscreen attorneys in Alabama can help you validate your claim and fight for the damages you may be entitled to recover.

How Much Benzene Was Found in the Affected Products?

Johnson & Johnson stated in a press release that “low levels” of benzene were detected in some samples of its products, but failed to elaborate on what it considered to be “low levels.”

In a-class action lawsuit filed against the Neutrogena Corporation in a California federal court, testing conducted by online pharmacy Valisure found concentrations of benzene greater than two parts per million, which is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s regulatory limit. In some cases, some products tested by Valisure displayed concentrations of nearly seven parts per million.

Is Benzene Normally Found in Sunscreen?

According to a press release announcing Johnson & Johnson’s voluntary recall of its products, benzene is not an ingredient in any of its sunscreen products. The company said it’s still investigating how the cancer-causing chemical made its way into the affected products.
