Attorney Tracy Cary Volunteers at Kenyan Orphanage

In July 2013, Attorney Tracy Cary and his daughter, Sara, were part of a team of 10 people from Covenant United Methodist Church who traveled approximately 32 hours to Kenya to work at an orphanage. The orphanage is called the African Gospel Church Baby Centre and is located near the Great Rift Valley in Nakuru, a city of more than 300,000 located about 100 miles northwest of Nairobi. The Centre provides care and nutrition to babies and children, most of who are later adopted into private homes. The Covenant team did several maintenance projects for the orphanage, including painting and building a fence.

In addition, the team spent a lot of time caring for the babies. The highlight of the trip was being able to witness adoptions of two of the children. Cary said, "We got to see the fulfillment of the whole reason the Baby Centre exists — the adoption of a healthy baby who was rescued from an uncertain future and placed in the loving arms of a mom and a dad." Tracy and Sara also got to play and sing with the praise band at the Ngata African Gospel Church. At the end of their stay at the orphanage, the team went to the Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Center in Nairobi and was able to participate in a safari and observe wild animals in their natural habitat at Lake Nakuru National Park.

The team ended the trip by visiting the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, which was the subject of a recent terrorist attack. Cary said, "We got to see what a beautiful country Kenya is. We saw so many hard working people, many of whom are very, very poor. It makes you realize how blessed we are in America for the opportunities and freedoms we enjoy. We take a lot for granted and a mission trip helps put things in perspective." Tracy previously participated in an international mission trip to Peru. Two other partners in the firm, Dan Talmadge and Joey Morris, have been on mission trips to Brazil.
