Jury Awards Our Client $21M in Wal-Mart Lawsuit
In 2008, our client suffered debilitating injuries while working in one of the 14 banana ripening rooms at the Wal-Mart distribution center in Brundidge, AL. She had been standing in the doorway when an unsecured, 40-pound counterbalance fell, crushing portions of her skull. Her face was cut open, resulting in extensive nerve and muscle damage. Rebekah Blades was just 26-years-old at the time of the accident. Mark Andrews explains that "this accident basically took away her life. She was relegated from being an accomplished young woman to being totally dependent on others."
Fortunately, Ms. Blades made the decision to pursue a lawsuit against Thermal Technologies and its contractor, Helsel Contracting, which had built Wal-Mart's banana ripening rooms and their doors. With the help of our firm, Ms. Blades contended that her injuries stemmed from the defendants' negligence. Not only did she have to undergo reconstructive surgery to repair the damage and scarring that was done to her face, but the accident has since caused her to develop seizures—which now occur on a regular basis. Because of her injuries, she is also unable to care for her own child.
In the end, a Pike County jury awarded Blades $21 million in damages; however, Attorney Mark Andrews says that the amount will never fully restore his client to the life she knew before negligence left her disfigured. While the verdict has helped Ms. Blades to move on from this horrific accident, nothing will restore the quality of life that she has lost. "This case is an example of just how callous negligent actions can be, especially when they're made by corporations and manufacturers who never stop for a moment to consider the life-changing damage such actions can cause," says Andrews.
